Gianyar Regency is well known as the centre of arts and cultures in Bali, located in the central part of the island, bordering Denpasar on the south and Klungkung on the east. Arts and traditional cultures have been well preserved and developed since Gianyar was the capital of ancient kingdom before Majapahit declared its power. When the Netherlands colonized Indonesia and around the independent day of Indonesia, Ubud, Peliatan and Mas became the centre of development of art and culture.

Gianyar Regency covers 368 square km inhabited by more than 354.530 people recorded around 2001. Local people mostly live in suburb area and around tourism area such as Ubud, working as part of tourism industry and also as labor in crafting industry. The Gianyar Regency is divided to
7 sub districts such as Payangan, Tegalalang, Tampak Siring, Ubud, Gianyar, Sukawati, and Blahbatuh.

• Goa Gajah - Means elephant cave, became a hermitage for eleventh-century Hindu priests.
• Pengosekan - A place of artists community who have already established their own galleries.
• Petulu - It is a place where you can see hundreds of white herons birds flying in certain trees.
• Sukawati - The biggest traditional art market offering various choice of handicrafts, paintings, fabrics, and sarongs originally from Bali.
• Ubud - Represents Balinese village with regular traditional Balinese performance, fine arts and cultural activities. Being a location for many painting and art Museum and Galleries.
• Monkey Forest - It is a resident of hundreds photogenic monkeys. A temple named Nyuh Kuning can also be found within five minutes walking from Monkey Forest entrance.
